I Am Beautiful: A Poem

In our very first Own It! workshop (held at The GAP in Birmingham), we facilitated a freewriting exercise. Freewriting involves writing continuously for a certain period of time without paying too much attention to things such as grammar, spelling or content. The purpose of the exercise is to produce raw, unfiltered material as you write the first things that come to mind.
We asked our participants to focus their freewriting on things they loved and found beautiful about themselves: both physically and mentally. After writing for one minute, each participant was asked to pick their favourite sentence. We then put all the sentences together.
This uplifting poem is the result of the exercise.
I Am Beautiful
It’s not wrong to be tall and a girl.
I am made of skin and hair and blood and bones, and I am beautiful.
My heart is big and warm.
I am a passionate and caring individual.
I love my mind and imagination; it is the best thing about me.
I laugh easily.
I’m glad I can laugh at myself, instead of getting angry at my weird behaviours.
My eyes are playful and framed by the smile lines of all life’s experiences.
I can keep other people calm in stressful situations.
Making other people smile makes me happy.
I want to help others feel good about themselves by focusing on their qualities and personality.
Every day is a new day.
It’s OK, I’m OK.
I have held this essence in me and as time goes by I feel more comfortable about just, being.
I truly believe that I am determined enough to make a difference in this world.
I fought the dragon of my self-esteem and won.
Why don’t you have a go at the activity yourself to see what positive things you can say about your own body?
